Communist Exhibition Room (featured on the Hammer and Sickle Tour )
find out what they ate, drank, wore and drove? What life really smelled, tasted and felt like? For
those who want to delve deep into the spirit of everyday socialist life, our Communist Exhibition Room – located in an authentic Budapest basement- is an excellent playground to rediscover and
relive the past. Furnished with goods salvaged from a 40-year period in which Hungary lived and worked under the yoke of Soviet oppression, this exhibition room is complete with sofas, bookcases, kitchen units and the indispensable tools of every true socialist household. All the items you find here are the pride of the hammer-wielding working class, produced in the indefatigable factories of the former socialist countries. They still echo the carefree days of Hungarian “Goulash Socialism”, when this land was considered the “happiest barrack” under the Great Soviet Regime. You will be able to browse among the myriad artefacts – books, certifications, badges, even board games that were designed to teach a child how to grow up to be a decent socialist character. This exhibition room is where our Hammer and Sickle Tour starts, giving you sufficient time to immerse yourself in the room’s ambience while your guide tells you all about the 1956 uprising and the years spent in its aftermath – right down to the fall of the Soviet Union.
The tour also visits various historical sights in Budapest – you will see the actual scars that the revolution left on some of the buildings, learn why we still have a Soviet memorial in the heart of the city and slowly go through the enormous cultural and political change that Hungary had to deal with over the last two decades. The incredible stories told on the Hammer and Sickle Tour and the clandestine atmosphere of the Communist Exhibition Room will give you a genuine insight into the socialist reality as you’ve always wanted to see it.
